Diesel cars are more fuel efficient - but not worth it for most people

Diesel engines are generally more fuel efficient than gasoline engines. But don't be fooled to think that this will definitely make the diesel engine a better choice.

Although you will find that diesel cars and even used cars are slightly more expensive than gasoline, you can pay almost anything for used cars. However, people think that the more valuable place for diesel is the front yard of the gas station. This is often true - even in today's environment, the price of gasoline and diesel is quite bad.

Let us give an example. Compared to the petrol version of 39mpg, Ford's diesel carnival can run 59 miles per gallon (both calculated from a real mpg calculator), which means you are better than 10,000 miles per year. Diesel spends more than $600 to top up the petrol car (this assumes that on January 25, 2017, the price of diesel and gasoline is around 120 pence per litre). )

However, you need to remember that not everyone can implement these MPGs. If you don't travel long distances and the engine is the most efficient, then you are unlikely to really save from the diesel engine. If you just want to buy a car in the town, then a small petrol or electric car may be your best choice.

Both have their own advantages - remember that fuel prices will fluctuate, so check them when you buy.

diesel engine

  • More economical – higher MPG
  • The engine is usually stronger - last longer
  • Suitable for long trips
  • It takes more money to buy a car.
  • Diesel vehicle consumption tax is cheaper
  • Provides more expensive parts if repairs are needed
  • Requires higher resale value compared to equivalent gasoline models
  • In some place, fuel is usually more expensive

gasoline

  • Gasoline in some place is usually cheaper
  • Suitable for short trips
  • Engine response is more sensitive - suitable for "performance" cars
  • Usually not as reliable as a diesel car
  • Vehicle consumption tax is more expensive
  • The speed of car depreciation is a little faster
  • Low engine efficiency and high fuel consumption

So from which car do you check the real MPG value before you choose one or the other? Honest John. They will give you a more accurate picture than the manufacturer's "official" mpg statistics.
